Woodvale was created by RI&C and named after Richard D. Wood, an early activist on behalf of the railroad. The town's purpose was to serve a new mine, RI&C No. 6, which was sunk to allow coal in this area to be mined without the need for long hauls underground.
Woodvale had a 1919 population of 1,200.
