This portion of the railroad as far as Robertsdale was built in the fall of 1874. B.J. McGrann and Company of Lancaster graded the route, Coffrode and Company of Philadelphia built the bridges and Thomas Keenan was awarded the tracklaying. The line was extended to a new company town of Woodvale (later Wood) in 1891, then again to Alvan in 1915. The last extension was in 1943 to a new opening and tipple of mine #9. The track ascends the valley of Trough Creek the entire distance, entering the main coalfield at Robertsdale.
