Shirleysburg was originally the site of Fort Shirley built 1755-56, an early outpost in the area and part of the frontier fort chain. It also was home to a tannery from 1812 to 1882 founded by the parents of Samual McVitty who went on to partner in the founding of the Leas and McVitty Tannery in Saltillo.
Shirleysburg had a 1919 population of 200 and a 1990 population of 140.
