Rockhill Furnace acquired its name from and developed as a result of the original charcoal powered Rockhill Iron Furnace of the 1830s. The railroad chose this location for its main shops, likely due to the lack of room in Mount Union and the proximity to the new coke powered furnaces. Rockhill had a 1919 population of 550 and a 1990 population of 421.
