As it existed prior to 1894, the Machine Shop was about one-quarter it's current length.

The Machine Shop took pieces from the Foundry and turned them into working parts or rebuilt parts already in service. The shop contains a great variety of machines, mostly powered by a complex array of overhead shafts, belts and pulleys.

Today the Machine Shop is one of the more endangered buildings in the complex. A massive beam that supports the roofline between the Machine Shop and Boiler House has rotted away. To keep the roof up, massive cribbing has been erected to support the roof above the beam. The roof in this area is also in poor shape.
