Coles was a small collection of homes, of which only one remains.
It the early years of the railroad, the Leas and McVitty Tannery in Saltillo had a company town here generating a significant amount of traffic shipping bark to Saltillo for use in tanning. After the tanneries closed, relatively little traffic originated here with only periodic lumber loads being loaded on the tie spur. It served mostly as a watering point in mid-climb of the mountain and a staging area for the Coles Valley Branch.
