This picnic grove was the site of the annual Grand Army of the Republic picnic in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The EBT had to bring out every piece of passenger equipment plus some "Dolly Varden" bark hauling freight cars to carry all the attendees. The picnic was reported to be largely a drunken brawl. With the coming of the automobile, the picnic lost its unique appeal and eventually ceased.
