This machine has been incorrectly labelled in the HABS/HAER documentation and on site as a boring mill, but is not as the mounting plate has no means of rotation. Rather, the tool holder moves up and down, making this a vertical slotter.

A veritcal slotter, or just plain "slotter" cuts cuts vertical slots in a workpiece, such as a keyway.
