The shaper is a machine tool which holds the workpiece in place, and the reciprocating mechanism in the machine moves the cutting tool from to side over the pice creating a horizontal linear cut. A feed mechanism on the machine moves the workpiece horizontally, perpindicular to the movement of the tool. the shaper is the sister of the slotter, except that in the slotter the tool moves vertically.
This machine has been physically labelled in the past as a "cutting tool" but "shaper" is the correct term.
The shaper was restored by volunteers of the Friends of the East Broad Top during 2010.
