'Sheffield'

"Speeders" are small self-propelled rail cars, used by railroad employees to inspect or maintain the tracks. They replaced handcars and could hold four to eight persons.

This wood frame speeder car has a Sheffield engine. Sheffield was a leader in the field of handcars and velocipedes (three wheeled hand driven railcars), and though they made the transition to gasoline powered cars, they were eventually eclipsed by the much more popular products of Fairmont. It is unknown of the chassis was built by Sheffield or if a Sheffield engine was used to repower and existing handcar. Unlike Fairmont engines which had a water hopper around the cylinder for cooling, the Shefield had fins cast into the cylinder jug for air cooling.

Photos show the car still be on the property during the reopening of the railroad in August 1960, however there are no signs of the car after that. Particularly in the 1970s, the EBT had a habit of selling of unneded assets to produce operating capital. Several MOW cars were sold off in this way and it is likely this car was one. Although some of the cars have since returned to the EBT, nothing is known of the current disposition of this car.
