'Lil' Phil'

"Speeders" are small self-propelled rail cars, used by railroad employees to inspect or maintain the tracks. They replaced handcars and could hold four to eight persons.

This speeder is an original EBT unit built by Fairmont, the leading maker of railroad speeders. It has has a steel frame and the optional roof kit installed. It is a Faimont model ST-2 and is nearly identical to the other Fairmont ST2 the "Ice Cube", except that it lacks the EBT-made side panels and doors. It also has a 2 speed rather than single speed transmission. It has a ventilation door in the front panel which the home built enclosure on the Ice Cube lacks. The speder has the optional factory warning bell.

Photos of this car from the Common Carrier Era are very rare, and as of this writing only one has surfaced. At some point in the early Kovalchick Toursit Era, this car was sold off the railroad, as was often done to surplus equipment to produced much needed reveune.

Many years later it was purchaced by Railways to Yesterday volunteer Phil Raynes (longtime conductor on the M-1.) It made its first trip back to the EBT for the 1999 Fall Spectacular during which it made test runs but had not yet had any cosmetic restoration. While owned by Mr. Raynes the car was not kept on the EBT property, but was transportedted to various narrow gauge lines including the EBT and the Doe River Gorge segement of the Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina for operation. The car returned to the EBT during subsequent years. The car was also posed next to the Saltillo Station shortly before its demolition in late 2004.

Mr. Raynes later sold the car to an informal group known as the "EBT Speeder Crew" that operated speeder cars on the then-recenlty cleared EBT trackage south of Rockhill during the 2000s. Reportedly the car was dissasembled for a full restoration but work stopped when EBT operations ended in 2011.

The car reappeared at the EBT by May 2025, stored in a partially idsassembled state. It is unclear who currently owns the car.
