'Osgood Crane'

This was an Osgood Model 18 crane. The model 18 was available as either a crane or a steam shovel, and on tracks or railroad wheels. This one was a crane model on 3' railroad chasis. Model 18s were self propelled via bevel gears to the axles. The Osgood was part of the EBT work train and is presumed to have performed modest lifts. The crane was not of sufficient size to handle a major derailment.

In late 1939 and early 1940, the Osgood Crane was pressed into service at the Timber Transfer in Mount Union to expedite moving off the track of standard gauge trucks from cars that were temporarily re-trucked to narrow guage for passage on the EBT. The trucks were from the large number of incoming standard gauge cement hoppers heading to Neelyton for construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. For this service the Osgood was equipped with outriggers on either side with flanged wheels supported by two extra rails. This enabled the crane to pick up trucks from the adjacent track and set them on the ground on the opposite side without tipping over. When construction on the Turnpike ended, the number of standard gage cars passing over the EBT dropped substantially and the Osgood ceased to be used in this role.^AP4770

This crane was sold to Kovalchick Salvage in the late 1940s and is presumed to have been scrapped by them.
