2nd #4 was of a very similar design to locomotive #8.G3 It was the first locomotive purchased by the EBT on a payment plan, due to the compromized financial situation of the railroad at that time. G1
Second #4 was the second locomotive named after Cromwell Township, the location of Rockhill and Orbisonia. The township was named after Thomas Cromwell, one of the founders of the Bedford Iron Furnace located where Orbisonia currently exists, the first iron furnace west of the Susquehanna River.
In its early service, the locomtive had an ornamental finial at the top of its smokestack and a single sand dome between the stack and steam dome, with the bell just ahead of the cab. A muffler for vacuum brakes protruded from the top of the cab. Near the end of its life the stack finial was gone, a second sand dome had been added between the cab and steam dome, and the bell relocated to between the stack and first sand dome. The vacuum brake muffler was gone and dual air compressors added for air brakes.
This locomotive was used in an experimental train of mine cars pulled over the EBT mainline from the mines to Mount Union. A few such trains were run but the mine cars did not perform well in trains and the idea was dropped. G4 AP2147
The locomotive was reported as reitred in 1927 and was removed from the roster by the end of 1934. Second #4 was one of the the last of the old narrow firebox locomotives on the EBT, second only to second #5 which lasted until 1942. It's final disposition is unknown.
Her headlight, which she appears to have worn her entire career at the EBT, remained onsite and was sold by the railroad in the 1970s to a collector in Michigan. Michael Allen donated the headlight to the EBT Foundation and it is now part of the EBT Archvies and Special Collections
A photo in the EBT Archives and Special Collections may show 2nd #4 being hauled out of the roundhouse after her last service and near the end of her time at the EBT.AP262
